Feeling anxious today? Me too!

To be honest, I never post or write about this thing called politics. It feels too decisive and divided lately.

But I keep repeating this mantra to myself: "Why can't we all just get along?" which is most famously attributed to Rodney King. It feels to me like the tension in our country is stronger than ever and it really saddens me.

I want to offer some support. For me, I'm reminded of what Bernard Meltzer so famously quoted, "Before you speak ask yourself if what you are going to say is true, is kind, is necessary, is helpful. If the answer is no, maybe what you are about to say should be left unsaid."

How would it be if we all used this bit of advice? Maybe we can! Start by simply practicing this. Maybe it can ease some tension in those circles where it feels like it's hard to know the "right" thing to say. Maybe invite others to follow your lead!

Navigating difficult election seasons and politically charged times can be challenging, especially with the heightened emotions, opinions, and divisions that often arise. Here are some strategies I’ve put in place, for maintaining emotional balance and handling the pressures that come with these times:

Stay Informed but Limit Overexposure

Balance your media intake: Get information from reliable, neutral sources and set limits on the amount of news you consume daily. Constant exposure to political news can increase stress and anxiety.
Stay mindful of your sources:
Aim for reputable, fact-based news to stay informed without getting swept into misinformation or sensationalism.

Prioritize Self-Care

Practice mindfulness and grounding exercises:
Activities like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help keep you centered and reduce stress.
Take Breaks:
Give yourself permission to step away from discussions, social media, or news feeds when it feels overwhelming. Replace that time with hobbies, exercise, or spending time with loved ones.

Cultivate Empathy and Seek Understanding

Listen actively: When talking with others who may hold different opinions, focus on understanding rather than persuading. Practicing active listening can reduce tension and help you respond more compassionately.
Practice curiosity: Try to understand the perspectives of others by asking open-ended questions and validating their experiences, even if you don’t agree.

Engage in Constructive Conversations

Be mindful of boundaries: It’s okay to express that you’d prefer to keep certain conversations light or steer clear of political topics when socializing.
Approach with humility and openness:
If you choose to engage in political discussion, do so with a willingness to learn and adapt. A non-confrontational tone can make for a more open dialogue.

Support Causes and Get Involved Constructively

Channel energy into positive action: If you feel strongly about certain issues, engage in community service, support charities, or volunteer for organizations that align with your values.
Vote mindfully:
Taking the time to understand candidates and issues can help you feel more in control and proactive in shaping outcomes that align with your values.

Build a Support Network

Find like-minded individuals: Connect with friends, family, or community groups where you feel safe discussing concerns, frustrations, or hopes.
Practice sharing positively: Share positive news or initiatives with others, which can boost collective morale and inspire action.

Maintain Perspective and Hope

Focus on long-term progress:
Remember that political landscapes shift, and even if current events are challenging, change is constant.
Remember your personal agency:
While it may seem that individual actions have limited impact, collective action starts with personal choices.

I hope these strategies help you maintain some balance today. I’m sending everyone love, and am full of appreciation, and respect for you and your individual beliefs.
