Thank You, Sharon Salzberg!
Happy Spring Equinox! I came across a wonderful article in Lion's Roar magazine this week.
I think it's a safe assumption that many of us need balance right now. Sharon describes balance by stating:
"The kind of balance I'm talking about is not a measurement of how much time you spend doing one thing and then another, trying to create equality between them. Instead, it has to do with having perspective on life, and the effort you're putting out, and the changes you're going through. We establish this sense of balance within. It demands of us wisdom, and it gives us a growing sense of peace."
Yes, now that's some equanimity right there!
Looking further into equanimity and what it means, the Oxford Dictionary defines it as "mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation." I feel like trying on equanimity is crucial right now as we are living in heightened uncertainty, rapid change, and deep polarization. The ability to remain calm, centered, and non-reactive in the face of chaos allows for clearer thinking, better decision-making, and more compassionate interactions.
With both global and personal challenges constantly emerging, equanimity helps us stay steady and show up with emotional resilience. It can also offer us clarity in our decision-making by creating space for wise action instead of reactive decision-making. Equanimity can also offer us patience and understanding, helping us maintain stronger relationships rather than shutting down or lashing out at loved ones.
I think the most personal connection for me to equanimity right now is its support in modeling steadiness and strength in my coaching practice, which in turn is encouraging growth without burnout. It's been an essential tool to help my clients navigate transformation without being overwhelmed by resistance, fear, or frustration.
Above all, claiming our inner freedom leaves us feeling much more empowered to live intentionally - living through our values rather than external pressures.
