Sadness makes room for joy.
Hi friends,
First, thank you for your kind responses to last week's newsletter honoring Caren. As I move through this season of grief, I find myself returning to one of my favorite Rumi quotes and remembering that honoring sadness allows us to make room for joy:
Sorrow prepares you for joy. It violently sweeps everything out of your house, so that new joy can find space to enter. It shakes the yellow leaves from the bough of your heart, so that fresh, green leaves can grow in their place. It pulls up the rotten roots, so that new roots hidden beneath have room to grow. Whatever sorrow shakes from your heart, far better things will take their place.
I encourage you to take the time to honor and feel your feelings without pushing them down. Just as sorrow prepares you for joy, so often a breakdown brings a breakthrough. Sometimes that looks like having a big cry. Sometimes that leads us on a journey towards meaningful work.
